Get Rid from Hair Split Ends

400 Views POSTED ON October 24th, 2007

Split ends may to almost anyone who goes too long between trims. It is a common problem for long hair lovers because they are the most likely to put off getting haircuts. As the hair grows and reaches a certain length, the protective layer of the hair, the cuticle, becomes damaged and allows the fibers of the inner layers, the cortex and medulla, to fray. Though most often at the ends, splits can occur anywhere along the hair shaft and when it does happen, breakage occurs producing the feathery appearance in the hair that we refer to as split ends.

Here are the tips to prevent split ends.

1. Condition your hair after each wash. Use a deep conditioner once a week as an additional measure to prevent split ends. Furthermore, drink a lot of water to keep your body and hair constantly hydrated.

2. After you wash your hair, do not brush through wet hair! Carefully, with a wide-tooth comb, comb through the hair. You may want to use a hair detangler of a leave in conditioner to make combing through easier. If you brush your wet hair, it causes tears and split ends, leaving your hair damaged and visibly flawed. Avoid nylon bristles at all costs.

3. Use the right accessories for your hair. Using certain hair clips or using rubber bands can also cause split ends if you have very fine hair. Instead, try cloth covered hair bands or scrunchies to keep your hair back. Also, anything that says ‘NO Damage’ or something along those lines usually works.

4. Avoid using too many chemical products, such as gel, mousse, and hair spray. Hairstyling with these products damages and weakens the hair, leading to split ends. Do not use any haircare products containing alcohol, including alcohol-based shampoos. Alcohol causes the hair to lose moisture and become brittle. Dry hair is susceptible to splitting.

5. Minimize or eliminate the application of direct heat to the hair. Frequent hairstyling with blow dryers, hot curlers, hair straighteners, and curling irons depletes the hair of its natural oils, making it more susceptible to split ends. If you absolutely must blow dry your hair, use the lowest temperature possible and keep it at least 15 cm away from your hair.
