Coffee: A Public Delicacy and an Antioxidants

3,319 Views POSTED ON August 18th, 2007

My heart was beating so fast when I took a glass of milk which was added with a spoon of coffee some years ago. My doctor said that my heart has a different tendency so it will be better if I reduce coffee because of the caffeine. I decided not to take anything contains of coffee. But curiosity keeps coming when I see people go to a café and sip a cup of coffee with a lot of fun. What makes them like it? What’s inside a cup of coffee beside caffeine actually? Do they just pretending to be fun only to raise their social life by hang out at the café? Or is it about something I haven’t known yet? Well, lately I have the answers of all my questions and here is the clue.

Coffee has been the most famous drink in human history. It has become the number one beverage to be served while talking with others and become a lifestyle around the world. In fact, it is America’s number one beverage. The latest research in Harvard Medical School has confirmed that moderate coffee consumption doesn’t cause harm. Coffee may reduce the risk of developing gallstones, discourage the development of colon cancer, improve cognitive function, reduce the risk of liver damage in people at high risk for liver disease, and reduce the risk of Parkinson’s disease. Coffee has also been shown to improve endurance performance in long-duration physical activities.

Coffee contains over 300 naturally occurring base chemicals that act as powerful antioxidants. Antioxidants are your army to protect you from the toxic free radicals, which come from breathing oxygen and consuming sugar, that start chronic diseases. Antioxidants help stave off cancer, heart disease, diabetes and stroke. The active chemicals in coffee are most beneficial when consumed within 20 minutes after brewing. After that, coffee starts to oxidize and as we all know, it becomes a little bitter and acidic.

The study from the University of Scranton ranked black tea as second source of antioxidants, and bananas as third, in the average American diet. Caffeine raises your blood pressure, choose a decaffeinated one if you are going to drink a lot of coffee. decaffeinated coffee has the same antioxidant benefits as regular coffee. Coffee abstainers have a lower risk of developing high blood pressure than people who drink zero to three cups of coffee a day, which is considered moderate or occasional consumption. Healthy women who drank six cups of coffee a day had a lower risk of developing hypertension than those who consumed a moderate amount of coffee. For healthy men, the risk of hypertension does not increase or decrease; regardless of how much coffee they drink daily. Antioxidants decrease the risks of getting heart disease and cancer, and also battle free radicals caused by oxidation.

Well, previously I tend to avoid coffee, every kinds of coffee, because of my heart beating but now I think I will take a decaffeinated one because a cup of black coffee contains of 60-150 mg caffeine while decaffeinated coffee only has 2-5 mg of caffeine.

I leave all the options for you but still coffee can also be a source of excess calories due to added sugar syrups and dairy products. Everything can be good in moderation but will be bad in excess. You can keep sip it and get the benefit of it.
